![]() He mainly uses martial artes and slash moves, just as you’d expect from a samurai. He might carry a huge sword on his back, but he prefers to actually use two short swords to attack. Like Velvet, Rokurou is a demon who still retains a semblance of the humanity he’s lost. Handsome, with dark hair, and a hunger not only for food but also for violence. Velvet is a fantastic character not only visually (designed by Mutsumi Inomata), but also as a person. ![]() But there’s also plenty of human moments you share with her too. You can understand where’s she’s coming from, and why she has so much anger and pain. Sure, she’s on a Kill Bill style revenge quest (as I noted in my hands on preview of the game), so she’s going to be a bit dark and brooding, but it’s never laid on too thick. ![]() But the main thing is that she’s just a super cool character. Velvet is also the first female main protagonist in a Tales game, which is also pretty cool. However, stay in beast mode too long and that health will begin to plummet. Entering beast mode allows her to chow down on enemies, giving her different boosts and restoring some health. Not only is this badass conceptually, but it also ties in to how she plays. Velvet is a “therion”, a type of demon that is described as being able to feed on other demons. Imagine if Monica had a demonic arm that had the power to basically absorb any of her enemies. A very angry and bitter Monica who’s out for revenge, and is also a demon. Please keep in mind that you accrue characters as you progress through the game, so by its very nature party information is sort of a spoiler, but I’ll keep any non-premise info to a minimum. So, without further ado, here’s a little rundown of the characters that you’ll be adventuring with in Tales of Berseria. Combat is a bit needlessly over complicated, but also button mashy at the same time.It also led me to the disturbing conclusion that Chandler (as played by Matthew Perry) looks really good as the head of pretty much any anime character. Decent story with some major pacing issues. Rokurou was hands down my favorite character. The interactions even had me laughing at some parts. The game does a great job with its character interactions and designs, making you feel for and root for the main cast and empathize with the antagonists (heroes?) Plus, who doesn’t love playing as the bad guys! The interactions between Eizen and Zaveid were my favorite, and I went from despising Magilou at the beginning to admiring her strength against Melchior at the end. (Better late than never, right?) The soundtrack was decent, but not memorable. The variety of artes combined with characters was overwhelming at first, but I got the hang of it at around 27 hours into the game. I loved the variety of environments and boss fights, but the combat was a bit clunky to me and a bit button mashy. Thank goodness for Geoboards! It made traversal much better. The last ten hours or so was a wild ride, which made up for the earlier drag in pacing for me. However, towards the middle of the story the pacing began to drag tremendously (around the therion hunt). The plot made sense and the many optional event bubbles show that the development team went out of their way to provide as much background knowledge on the world as possible. “Why do birds fly?” This question is posed very early on in the game and is reflected on multiple times by the characters and their motivations. There were lots of things I liked, and some things that I didn’t. This game was something I was hesitant about purchasing, as I can’t remember the last time I’ve played a JRPG.
